“Bride Hard” Review: Rebel Wilson, Espionage, and a Whole Lot of Bridesmaids’ Chaos

June has arrived, and with it, the unmistakable buzz of wedding season. Instagram feeds are filled with bachelorette party photos, Pinterest is overrun with bridal bouquet inspiration, and somewhere out there, a bridal party is discussing seating arrangements over too many mimosas. But what if, in the middle of all this wedding fever, one of the bridesmaids was also a globe-trotting secret agent juggling floral arrangements and firearms?

Welcome to the world of Bride Hard, a new action-comedy hybrid that dares to ask the question: what happens when a spy becomes a maid of honor? The answer is simple—absolute chaos, endless laughs, and more high-octane shenanigans than your typical wedding can handle.

Rebel Wilson Goes Full 007 Meets Maid of Honor

Rebel Wilson leads the charge as Sam, a spy who works for an international intelligence agency known as “5 Eyes.” On the surface, she’s just a (very reluctant) bridesmaid for her childhood best friend Betsy (played by Pitch Perfect co-star Anna Camp). But beneath the surface? She’s a highly trained operative with a tendency to blow things up and save the world when she’s not dodging bridezilla drama.

Sam is the quintessential fish out of water. She’s the kind of bridesmaid who forgets the itinerary, messes up the dress fittings, and doesn’t know the first thing about making a Pinterest board for a bridal shower. Naturally, the other bridesmaids begin to question her commitment to the whole maid-of-honor thing. But of course, they have no idea she’s secretly working missions that involve international terrorists and top-secret gadgets. Typical.

The Director Who Brought You “Con Air” Adds a Splash of Confetti

Simon West, the director behind big, loud, guy-centric hits like Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and The Expendables 2, steps into new territory here—kind of. While Bride Hard is clearly centered on female friendship and bridal party bonding, it brings the full-throttle action that fans of his earlier films know and love.

West basically fuses the macho energy of Die Hard with the bridal chaos of Bridesmaids—a recipe that, surprisingly, works. The film isn’t trying to win awards or rewrite the rules of cinema. It knows exactly what it is: a tongue-in-cheek romp that leans into absurdity, lets the comedy fly, and delivers enough wild stunts to keep even the most cynical viewer entertained.

The Bridesmaid Dream Team

Wilson isn’t alone in this madcap adventure. She’s joined by a killer supporting cast who each bring their own brand of humor to the table. There’s Anna Chlumsky (of Veep fame), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Idol, Only Murders in the Building), and Gigi Zumbado, who help round out the bridesmaid crew.

Each character fills a distinct archetype in the wedding party: the no-nonsense planner, the emotional soul, the Instagram-obsessed party girl—you know the drill. But together, they create a hilarious, chaotic energy that plays beautifully off Wilson’s rogue, rule-breaking personality. Their chemistry feels authentic, like they’ve been downing bottomless brunch mimosas together for years.

And let’s not forget Anna Camp, whose on-screen bond with Wilson adds a deeper emotional layer to the film. Their friendship, while strained at times, serves as the heart of the story. It’s about loyalty, miscommunication, and how even the strongest relationships need a little TLC—sometimes in the form of a heartfelt apology… or a grenade launcher.

A Surprise Villain (With a Jawline to Match)

If you’re expecting a typical rom-com trajectory where the hunky male lead swoops in to save the day, think again. Justin Hartley (This Is Us) is introduced as the charming love interest, the classic “he’s so hot he must be good” character. But plot twist: he’s actually the bad guy.

Hartley plays against type here as a faux-prince charming who reveals his true colors when the stakes are highest. He goes full wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing, giving the film a fun jolt of betrayal. His villain arc isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s a fun subversion of expectations.

Meanwhile, Stephen Dorff channels his inner Hans Gruber as the movie’s main villain. He’s not quite as charismatic or quotable as Alan Rickman’s iconic baddie, but he tries his best to embody the suave, vaguely European antagonist we all know and love from classic ‘80s action flicks. The problem? He’s more bitter than scary, kind of like if your ex-boyfriend ran an arms dealership.

But perhaps the most delightful addition to the ensemble is Sherry Cola, who plays Nadine, Sam’s fellow spy and 5 Eyes commander. Cola’s dry wit is pitch-perfect as the woman in Sam’s ear, quite literally, offering logistical support during explosive shootouts and offering zero patience for any of Sam’s emotional baggage. It’s the perfect straight-man performance in a sea of chaos.

High Kicks, Hijinks, and Holy-What-Just-Happened Moments

Now let’s talk about the action, because Bride Hard doesn’t skimp on the stunts. From high-speed chases on ATVs across tropical beaches to hand-to-hand combat in wedding gowns, this movie throws it all at the wall and watches it stick—glitter and all.

Rebel Wilson, best known for her improvisational humor and scene-stealing quips, reportedly trained for nine months to pull off the physicality required for her role. And it shows. Whether she’s diving through windows, zip-lining into a reception tent, or drop-kicking baddies in heels, she throws herself into every scene like a true action star (who also happens to love brunch and bad decisions).

One standout moment sees Wilson’s Sam literally flinging herself down a laundry chute while Anna Camp clings to her back like a panicked koala. It’s a scene straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon, and it’s every bit as hilarious as it sounds.

In another, more straight-up action-heavy moment, Sam takes out an entire squad of henchmen with the kind of stunt choreography that feels like a love letter to Lara Croft. It’s absurd, over-the-top, and gleefully self-aware. That’s the key here—Bride Hard knows how ridiculous it is, and it leans into it with every champagne-soaked punch.

Friendship Is the Real Superpower

Beneath all the punches, pratfalls, and punchlines, Bride Hard has a surprisingly touching message about female friendships and how they evolve over time.

Sam and Betsy’s relationship is central to the film—not just because one of them is getting married and the other is trying to keep her alive, but because their bond is at a crossroads. They’ve grown apart. Life happened. Careers, distance, relationships—all the usual suspects. And yet, their shared past keeps tugging at them, demanding reconciliation.

This is where the film finds its emotional core. As women grow older, their friendships change. Some get stronger, some fade, and others become difficult to navigate. Whether it’s becoming a mother, climbing the career ladder, or—in Sam’s case—spending half your life undercover, priorities shift. But that doesn’t mean love and loyalty disappear.

The film gently reminds us that friendship isn’t about constant closeness. It’s about showing up when it counts, even if that means crashing a wedding and taking out terrorists. Okay, maybe not exactly that—but you get the idea.

Final Thoughts: A Toast to the Fluffy and the Fun

If you’re looking for deep philosophical insights or Oscar-worthy drama, Bride Hard won’t be your cup of tea—or your glass of prosecco. But if you’re after a good laugh, some heartwarming moments, and Rebel Wilson karate-chopping a groomsman in slow motion, this is your movie.

It’s a film that doesn’t pretend to be more than it is, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable. With a strong comedic cast, a director who knows his way around an explosion, and a surprisingly tender message about the value of lifelong friendships, Bride Hard is a blast of glittery fun.

So grab your girls, put on your matching satin robes, pop some popcorn (or bubbly), and enjoy a wild, punch-drunk ride through wedding season. Because in the world of Bride Hard, the bouquet toss might just come with a grenade pin.
